Lilyd, thanks for posting the great pix. I knew I would like Jason. I had listened to some of his music on MySpace when I was looking into the top 24 and I loved his voice and the dreadlocks are an added bonus. I also love how humble he is.

thank you for making a jason fan thread. I thought I was gonna have to be the first.
Jason became my favorite as soon as the Top 50 spoilers were announced, which was before auditions were aired. lol. I loved his look, and after i watched his youtube videos, I was completely hooked.
Anyway, I thought he was amazing last night. So fresh and simple. A guy with a guitar melts my heart.

His video of "Crazy" and also the one of "Santeria" is just lovely.
I'm pretty sure he sang "Crazy" in one of the auditions and they couldn't get it cleared, so that's why it was never shown. Perhaps all of his audition songs could not get cleared. Because the judges seem to really like him, so I'm not sure why they would keep him hidden until last night.
I've heard nothing but great things said about him since last night. I really hope he makes it to the Top12

Nigel Lythgoe mentioned in one of his interviews that they couldn't get it cleared and he was "devastated and distraught" because of it. Nigel that is, not Jason. lol.
That audition clip they showed of him last night looked all kinds of fake, but whatever he was singing sounded lovely.

I wasn't going to watch this season at all, and had actually proclaimed this aloud to anyone who would listen (like anyone really cares?! ha!), probably as a way of convincing myself that I wouldn't watch. Because, you know, if you say it aloud, that makes it TRUE, right?
WRONG!
My mom insisted I watch. She knew she could bait me by saying there were some really cute guys. Now, I'm old enough to be their ... uhm ... aunt, but still, I like a cute guy as much as the next aunt. So I watched.
I was digging a few of the other guys, thinking, cool, my mom wasn't wrong, and called her during commercials breaks to "discuss", as has been our tradition for all other seasons (except the first, which I only watched toward the end). I told her I was happy I was watching.
And then ...
... JASON. His little interview/pre-song piece/whatever it's called. I was like, "Oh my god. Who IS this guy? And why has no one mentioned him to me before this moment? HELLO!?!" I was "praying", "Please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck. Please be as good as you look. Please. Please."
Because my god, he looks good. Better than good. Better than great. Better than any adjective I can possibly pull out of a hat or from any thesaurus. The dreadlocks, the eyes, the mouth, the nose, the skin, the ensemble (LOVE that laid-back sort of "outfit"), the guitar, the attitude, and ...
... oh, the VOICE! The voice that made me swoon from the first note he sang. The twists and turns and highs and lows and tos and fros and hithers and yons. Excuse me, everyone, while I swoon!
And then the shyness, the humble attitude, the complete lack of "look at me! look at me!" This, from a guy who would have every "right" to swagger and act like a "star". Yet he didn't. Which made me love him even more.
I called my mom. "Oh. My. GODDDDD!" I yelled. "What the HELL!?? Oh, I'm in LOVE!! IN LOVE!!!!!"
But I guess I have to get in line. 'Cause my mom and sister were already screaming the same thing.
I am SO glad I was convinced to watch.
I cannot wait for next week! :)

I think Jason might be kind of like Bo Bice was in season 4 (no, they don't sound or look alike) in the way that neither of them had any pre-top 24 air time but quickly gained a huge fan base once the top 24 shows aired.
Jodi, I'll be in my living room screaming the same thing :)

great article on jason
http://www.guidelive.com/sharedcontent/dws/ent/stories/DN-castro_0219gl.State.Edition1.262d376.html
here is a piece of it:
The low-maintenance approach to life suits his singing style, which he describes as "kind of an extension of my personality: real easygoing."
Sadly, viewers haven't had the chance to hear a single note.
"It's kind of frustrating," he admits. "Everybody's getting to know people, to like people, so it's kind of a disadvantage at first."
But at least in Mr. Castro's case, there's a reason for his screen absence: The song he chose in his original audition and in Hollywood wasn't granted clearance to be used on the show. Idol's executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, in a phone interview last week, recalled the controversy.
The song was "Crazy," by Gnarls Barkley, which is owned by three entities, Mr. Lythgoe says. Because one of the three said no, Mr. Castro's airtime was shot.
"It was one of the best performances we've ever had, and we couldn't show anyone," the producer says.
After his first Hollywood audition, Mr. Castro recalls, "Simon said it was in his top five performances, so that was great feedback."

I prefer "DreadHeads" for Jason's fan club....and believe we are very safe with that title, because it is highly unlikely he will be cutting his hair. It seems to be part of his identity, his trademark.
Except for his loyal following, he's referred to as "the dread guy", so he'd be foolish to rid himself of them now. And he better not mess with those beautiful baby blues either!!
I can't wait to see and hear his performance next week!!!!

Jason is amazinggg. I have loved him ever since Cheyenne. When I found out he was going to be on American Idol I freaked out.
At first, it was really frustrating he had a real lack of airtime.
But now I know, it's not that they were using him as cannon fodder or anything. They just didn't have the rights to "Crazy".
It doesn't seem to have made much difference though, as Jason's version of "Daydream" is #1 out of all the Idols on itunes.
I have a fansite for him, so check it out when you get time:

I don't. I don't want him getting pigeonholed as "that rasta dude with the dreads". Because you know that's what would happen if he did even ONE reggae song.
This man is so exquisite. Drop dead. Hands down, THE most exciting contestant ever to grace the sometimes disgraceful stage of American Idol. I can't wait to see what he'll do next!
Miss Tara
February 24th, 2008, 09:18 AM
He would totally be pigeonholed as the raste dude with dreads. I was just being funny. I mean that would seem like a stereotypical choice for him. Even though I love "No Woman, No Cry"
There are some good songs from the 70's. Not sure how many good songs will be on the list of 50 that they get to choose from though. I'm sure he'll be fantastic at whatever he chooses.
Miss Tara
February 24th, 2008, 09:22 AM
When I was looking at the list, I immediately started hoping someone would sing "American Pie", love that song. Although, I could see someone like David Cook singing it as well.
The kids are given a list of about 50 approved songs...songs that they have the rights to sing, and also the rights to distribute and sale. Out of those 50, the kids are given 3 songs each, and then TPTB chooses one of those songs. This is according to Garrett in one of his exit interviews.
So really, the chit'run don't have a lot of say-so in what they sing.

Hi all,
I've heard some spoilers for tonight. Well, kind of. I don't know what song Jason sings but the judges are not kind to him, and he plays his guitar again, which the judges think is a bad idea.
So, we may need to vote extra tonight.

yeah i heard that too. i wish they would make up their minds. first they praise him for playing then they give him crap about it. they are so inconsistent. i thinkhe will be fine though, he has a HUGE fan group on the idol boards, the most popular one on there as matter of fact. but you are right, we still need to vote hard, dont want to have another daughtry happen...

I was hoping Jason would not use his guitar for the 2nd week in a row, for this very reason. Its good to play an instrument, but lets try and mix it up a bit. Jason will need to improve on stage presence and not be so shy up there. I am curious to see if he's any good without his 'security blanket.' Hopefully he sticks around another week.
Miss Tara
February 26th, 2008, 06:01 PM
If Jason makes it big as a solo artist...he's always going to have his guitar. And why is that a bad thing? John Mayer, James Morrison, Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews....all current artist that rarely leaves the guitar behind.
American Idol is like that.....it's happened to many contestants. They want you to stay true to yourself, never mess with that....one week later they want you to mix it up...the next week....you should have stayed true to yourself.
Jason isn't a popstar diva....he seems like the type of musician that will always have an instrument attached to him when he's singing. That's his style. Take it or leave it. So, he shouldn't be critizised for being himself on this show. Although, he will be, and I'm prepared for that. But I love him with the guitar. I don't need to see him dancing around the stage and having snappy fingers and jazz hands.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. We are all entitled to one.

I agree with you 102%!!!!
Add me to the list, also. AI makes me  because they confuse the contestants & the audience. You need to be unique... I didn't recognize it... you're too old-fashioned... you're not old-fashioned enough... you should have tweaked the song arrangement... why did you re-arrange the song, it's a classic???? CONFUSING, CONFUSING...
This year, they have allowed instruments & only 1 person played 1 the 1st week out; Jason on guitar. But, don't play an instrument in 2 consecutive weeks!
AI has it's SINISTER side, unfortunately. TPTB via the 3 stooges (ur, er, judges) may be attempting to bring Jason down a peg or 2. His popularity following last weeks performance after practically no pre-show exposure surpassed some key plants such as, Michael Johns & David Lee Cook, on several sites. But we will see whether the criticism was biased or not. And I will be voting frantically!

I don't think that that was a "schmaltzy" song selection. It wasn't executed to perfection but the tune sounded like something Jason could have done well with perhaps if he was just a little bit more comfortable on the AI stage. I had no objection to the guitar accompaniment.

If he does make it as a solo artist, yeah, he can strap that guitar and play it whenever he wants. But right now, he is just one of 20 trying to make it. Jason has to show he has more under his sleeve or else people will tire of his act real quick. His shy demeanor also doesnt help but thats for another topic. Tonights preformance was very boring and I didnt like the song choice at all.

Ok, so I listened and watched Jason's performance again...a few times....well ALOT!! Granted he did not have the strongest vocals last night, but there is something about him that is so very appealing. His shyness, his uniqueness, his wholesome, natural tone. He just really sings from his guts. And I thought his pre-video was adorable, hilarious and so honest!
A few of the other guys are so trying to perform to what they think TPTB are looking for. Jason isn't doing that, he's doing him, and looks like he won't be changing his tune for them. He's just an honest performer. Chris Daughtry was like that. He was called on "not mixing it up enough, always sounding the same" and he really didn't care. And look at him now, he didn't win, he got a huge following, and a great music career.
This show is not about who wins, it's about having this incredible exposure, and then running with it. Historically, it sounds like the contestants are better off NOT winning due to the intense restraints of the AI contract.
So, don't fret if the judges are giving Jason a beating. In a matter of weeks, he's gained a fanbase that will sustain a music career of his choosing.
Again, I for one would love for him to stay until at least the Top Ten......hello!!?! AI Concert Tour!!!!!!!!!!

I needed to bring this over! Vote for the Worst is another site that just trashes the idols. So I was so happy to read this. (I apologize to all the MJ fans)
Jason Castro
Song: “I Just Want To Be Your Everything” by the BeeGees
Notes: Jason is like a performing savant. In his interviews he can’t even form three words together to make a sentence (much like Randy on one of his BETTER days.) But you put him on-stage and stick a guitar in his hands and Jason sings like a pro. His off-beat arrangement and clean, effortless singing is what makes Idol so great, finding undiscovered talent. Jason is a talent.
GRADE: GROOVY -- But because he’s not a ringer, the judges crap all over him. Simon tries to verbally man-rape his performance, calling it “terrible, and an affront to humanity.” (I might’ve paraphrased a little.) This is the most naked attempt at sabotage I’ve seen since, uh, last week. According to the stupid IPod popularity poll that the Idol Producers didn’t want you to see, Jason had the most hits of any Idol. His Jack Johnson style of poppy love and happiness songs could be on the radio right now... Instead the judges celebrate some godawful Fleetwood Mack or Queen song hackery. And to further the AI torpedo attempt Pinhead Paula tells Jason not to play his guitar next week. Why? Because he stands out right now and could actually win your National Karaoke Wank-fest? Screw you Idol.

Simon was even tougher on Jason Castro, the only other contestant who picked up an instrument tonight, and while I can't deny that I heard the dreadlocked dude gasp for air before botching that big note on ''Evv-reee-thiiiing,'' and that Randy was perhaps technically correct in saying he's not a ''great'' vocalist, if there's one performance I'm downloading tomorrow on iTunes, it's his folksy cover of Andy Gibb's ''I Just Wanna Be Your Everything.'' There's just something so sweet and sincere about the sound of Jason's voice, and there's a comfort level he has as an artist, that somehow defies a post-performance critique. Not to mention the fact that his reluctant interview package — in which he expressed his surprise in discovering Idol requires of him ''a lot more of the not-music stuff than I thought'' — was the night's funniest moment.

Thank you... lilyd!:)
Great Jason news! And it is true that Jason as an artist is already sounding radio-friendly.
The "judges" attempts to discredit this blue-eyed beautys' performance last week was overkill. When they go over-the-top, I ignore most of the inane judgements as I observe the contestants' response/s. I watched & listened last week & was charmed by Jasons' performance & contrary to the judges opinions, I felt it was a good choice of song for him.
And the suggestion to lose the guitar next week reeks of intended sabotage as Jason is a bit shy. I don't see why they are urging he sing without guitar since that is his performance style, which may make him appear more vulnerable on stage. I think he would feel somewhat naked without his guitar & shouldn't even be put in this predicament considering AI permitted musical instruments this season. If Jason chose guitar accompaniment each performance, that should be ok.
Let the voters decide.

Thats awesome. Keep them coming.
Does anyone know Jason's ethnic background? I am curious. I want to know more about him.
Miss Tara
March 1st, 2008, 09:27 PM
His parents are from Columbia, so Columbian!
And he was a drummer in a band called Keeping Lions. They were managed by the same guy that manages the singer Cheyenne. She had the show on MTV, and apparently Jason kind of "dated" her.
Jason decided to make him self a front man less than a year ago. So, he's just getting used to having all the attention on him.
That's about all I know about him, besides the questions he answered on the American Idol page.

I thank Simon for acknowledging the talent Jason Castro is. He is charming but more than that, he made me believe that he can win this thing with Hallelujah. He just needs to bring his A game always.
What I'm pissed about is that, Randy has never praised Jason even for his Hallelujah rendition. Randy is just not a fan. I'm sure Randy isn't a fan of Jason's style of music. i just think that as a judge, you have to be open to different styles and when a person sings a song well, give him credit. Cmon dawg! :p

I do love jason castro. I just hope that his fans in the us maximize their capabilities to draw more votes for him because it seems like he's losing his edge to the other contestants. I believe he's way more entertaining to watch than anyone else in the show. He's got the goofy side that always makes me smile and that authentic naďve personality which highlights his uniqueness. And it'll definitely be a great loss to AI7 to not have jason castro at least in the final 3.
Has anybody here feels how he seemed to be emotionally connected to the songs he chose? That actually does the magic in his every performance.
If only there's much more I can do to help him other than patronize him from here in the philippines(since we're out of the show's bounds ) I would be very willing to extend my hand.

I so agree with you, gildalovesjc! Jason needs to remain in this competition until no less than the Final 4! He is far more alluring than several contestants who have managed to surpass Jason in terms of popularity or at least what AI is conveying in its elimination process. I know that AI always announces the contestants that are saved "in no particular order" according to Ryan. But the idols saved early gives the impression that they are more popular & that plays on the psyche with some fans. Oh, he's not doing so well, I'm not gonna waste my votes, soooo, I'll apply my voting efforts to my next best candidate ftw.
Jason is still quite popular & the votes must be there. I voted like crazy last week & will do the same this Tuesday!

This afternoon I've driven myself mad thinkin bout what song Jason would probably sing tomorrow night. After seeing clips of him on IGB taping, I got really excited on picking songs that will be most fitting to Jason's style. There are a lot of inspirational songs my officemate recommended and I ended up in a web of song varying from all-time favorites upto the most unlikely song you'll hear in a funeral! :confused:That gave me headaches yet I realize whatever song Jason will pick for tuesday I'm pretty confident that he'll never fail us and give it his best shot tommorow night.;)
Go Jason!
I feel that the theme for this week is his cup of tea -- having seen him perform at Lakepoint Church Texas he should be cooking a heck of a stellar performance that would definitely delight all AI audiences within its bounds!:D

I AGREE!!! jason deserves attention :) This young man has eyes that speak ...jason's eyes speak of the soul within as does the beauty and energy he radiates. I am a professional psychic and astrologer as well as an artist and can see the power and beauty of his soul . YouTubed feverishly today for acoustic version of Mariah Carey's songs:
1. We Belong Together - Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVdME2B_ZW0)
2. One Sweet Day - Video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZumHk6FngrU)
3. My All - Video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=GRhWlNNs_Po)
4. Hero - Video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=_oWVwfRJaKE)
5. Against All Odds..dunno if this is allowed but MC did a cover of the song - Video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q7kzhyx4UPg)
6. Endless Love...another cover - No video but there's one guitar only version (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IbA-NOUuJIw)
Another idea of mine is Music Box (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ezOypfiOpnc). I think an acoustic version can be done with this song.
But if JC can whip up an awesome acoustic arrangement of MC song never done before by any other artists he'll own the night.

I wish there was a way to get this info to Jason. His best performance to date was when he sang the Halleluia song. Well, there's a Christian artist that has his own version of Amazing Grace and even his voice could double as Jason's. A song like that would put him in the top. Take a listen to Chris Tomlin's Amazing Grace. I can even see Jason's eyebrows raising and lowering during this song!
I love his humble disposition too and I think he's due for a make over. Dread locks aren't quite up to the look for the next idol...not when the compeition is David Cook... that's something to beat. Jason has is wonderful, down-home voice...now he just needs that song.

You don't really mean that do you Jen? You would have Jason change himself just to win???? His whole package is part of his charm-I wouldn't change a thing about him. Those dreads are part of the reason Jason got so much coverage in the early stage of the competition-it was unusual so people paid attention.

WoW!! Are you sure Jason WASN'T singing that and the other guy was just lip singing????;) I would love to hear Jason sing that-if you close your eyes and just listen it really could be Jason!
Thanks Jen for finding that - I'm going to have to put that in my fav's

That was AMAZING. You made the perfect call. Jason needs to do that song. Chris's performance of that song makes me realize how perfectly suited Jason would be for that song, for that sort of version of it.
Wow.

My heart sank for him tonight:( At this point I think it would be better for him to go home:( The non-Castro fans can say what they want and say that I am making excuses for him but IMO I am not surprised that he didn't do well tonight. After last week with Paulagate and all the negativity then all 3 of them threw him under the bus with ISTS-which I am betting they have never heard that version before-what did anyone expect him to do next??? He must have been so depressed with their remarks that I certainly wasn't surprised that he missed some lyrics, I am sure he was distracted by their negative comments from the previous song - Gawd I feel for him!!

For those who thought that he tanked purposefully or that he mouthed "Don't Vote", Jason himself disputed this in a recent interview. For his own take, check out:

Thanks DC. Have tried to watch all of his interviews since leaving and although most are word for word the same (questions dictated by TPTB?) some of the later ones yesterday he seemed more comfortable with the whole situation and was able to better express himself.
And for those that have assumed that Jason is always stoned or just plain "slow" - He confirmed that he made a 1340 out of 1400 on his SAT's when he took them in High School, besides if you did your homework on Jason you would know that he is on a Petroleum Engineering Scholarship to one of the most Prestigious Colleges in Texas so the boy ain't no dummy. Come to think of it, typically those with really high IQ's have a hard time "socially" fitting in because they are often misunderstood or bored with the normal day to day interactions. I am not saying Jason is a Savant or anything just over analyzing :p

Oooh...! I knew guys who act like him always have big brains. Think he's simply perfect...being smart, handsome, transparent, and talented, you just don't bump with people like this everyday. And I'm so envious of mandy...! Nah..., just happy 4 both of them. I just hope jason will still be out there extending his talent to everyone....so as the other idols....lovin them all!!
The best season of ai EVER!
