been a Cook's fan since Day 1. however, it's rather depressing to find out this. Rather similar to what he just did tonight.

Yeah, in the intro Ryan said it was the Chris Cornell version of Billie Jean. I don't care though - that took an amazing amount of vocal control, power and range. Loved. It.

Are you sure Ryan said Chris Cornell? I could swear he said someone else but for the life of me I can't remember.......dang it, I will have to rewatch the tape!

My BAD. i watched it again, and noticed that Ryan did give credit to Chris Cornell...but i really hope David Cook can do something really different without using other people's arrangements! Go David C!!!!:):D

i like David Cook. i believe little david and big david will face off in the finals.
but i just wish david cook OR the JUDGES would acknowledge and give credit where credit is due. Randy said David C is so original. i really beg to disagree... david cook's version of Billie Jean is NOT an original from DC. He just imitated this version from CHRIS CORNELL. It's actually a rip-off. just like what he did to eleanor rigby. i just wish they'd (cook and judges) acknowledge where the original versions come from.

I would tend to believe that nobody tries to take credit for a cover of anything on the show.
From other blogs and newscaps (including rickey.org), David C has given credit to both of his covers ("Eleanor Rigby" and last night's "Billy Jean"). Last night, Ryan did mention it. Apparently the Eleanor Rigby one was given but cut in the editing for TV. Let's face it, almost everything is a cover of somebody's work. There are minor changes, but most are pretty close to someone else's work. Even David A's "brilliant" performance of "Imagine" was basically a cover of the Eva Cassidy version.
Think of it this way. They have one week to select a song, get music, work on the song and their arrangement, rehearse themselves, rehearse with vocal coaches, then rehearse with a band, plus trying to do all the advertising gimmicks that the Idol machine has them doing (photo ops, the Ford commercial, VIP events like "Horton Hears a Who", yadda, yadda, yadda). It's a very hectic week and not the best way to do a creative rearrangement of a song within a category that they may not know well. Realistically, they would probably have to get the music and rearrange is in the first 48 hours of each week to be able to truly fit the schedule. Since they don't know until the live show on Wednesdays (previously Thursday) if they'll even be in the show the following week, and sometimes they tape the show on Sundays, lighten up on them, folks. Even the ones that have been in the music industry with contracts, etc, are not seasoned veterans that can hammer this stuff out on demand.

Of course you are right DC. You have such a wonderful way of putting my thoughts into words:p
I think the claims that contestants "stole" some other artist's cover started on Season 4 with Constantine's version of My Funny Valentine and then Chris D. I never gave it much thought even though the judges complimented the singer on the version. I always assumed the vocal coaches or the band came up with it so it wasn't really their (the contestants) fault anyway.

I think they have given credit on AI. And David Cook is amazing! Even tho he didn't come up with the arrangement, he sang it well!! He knows how to take chances that wiill work out in his favor! He is musically intelligent!! And very cool in my book!
